PocketCAS: Mathematics Toolkit App Reviews

16 Customer Reviews:

This CAS is very useful, the data input is easy and can be quickly accomplished. Wish for further capabilities and improvements (ODE solving, integration of piecewise functions and heaviside dependent functions actually gives me errors) . Output can be improved, maybe by integration with LaTeX.

Useless

Actually doesn’t offer anything more that Wolframalpha (free) do. I would like to have my money back.

I have been using PocketCAS on my iPad 4 for some time now. I am very happy with it. I was very excited to find that PocketCAS is now available for the Mac - and it works!. All of my interactions with the author while using PocketCAS for the iPad has been very exceptional, and now v3.4.4 has removed all the bugs that I have found. Most of what I thought were bugs were simply user error, and the feedback I get from the author is extremely helpful and usually within 24 hours of when I submit a support request. This is an amazing app! The interface for the Mac version is the closest thing to intuitive that I have found in any app, and has come very close to my no longer needing Maple.

PocketCas is a powerful app that is also flexible and intuitive. It has an easy-to-use interface, built-in functions that cover anything you could want in a math application, and excellent print and export options. Another plus is that the developer responds promptly to questions and suggestions with personalized answers. PocketCas delivers what it promises, and I highly recommend it.

I am amazed at how well PocketCAS works. It performs simple and complex algebra and calculus equations. It is very powerful and very flexible. You can save the PocketCAS docments in iCloud and then use them on your Mac. Anyone who needs to write out complex equations, needs to give this application a try. Isaac Newton would have been proud to use this software ;)

I wanted a tool that could do what Matlab did but I didn’t have an extra $1000 lying around. For $9.99 this app CAN NOT be beat. After using it, I would have paid more considering what it does. It is very powerful. I had some questions regarding the syntax (it is slightly different than Matlab) and the response from technical support was fast and helpful.

Awesome App

This app is great. Easy to use Versitile Comprehensive I’d highly recommend this app, especially to STEM students.

I can’t say enough good things about this app. You can enter measurements from the field on an iPad, then retreat to an office and continue from your mac. The new plot over time functionallity is awesome. I submitted a question to the author and received an excellent and enthusiastic response in minutes. Very Impressive.

The Best. Good documents, easy reading, and it really works very well. You can’t ask for more. You’ll be up and running in just minutes solving all your most important problems.

I have a paid subscription to Mathematica, but I usually use PocketCAS because it does most of what I want and its a lot easier. Two thumbs up! (Id give it more, but Ive only got two thumbs.)

Merooba · 10 years ago

This program has an incredible amount of power for such a compact program. I teach high school math, and this program can work with all sorts of expressions, graphs, and help check my work. Definitely worth it!

enberk · 10 years ago

Its not easy to pull off a perfect balance between utility and simplicity, but this app (both iOS and OS X) nails it! So much power and capability in such a light and simple interface deserves nothing but praise. Many other apps of this kind have a lot less capability in a much more cluttered GUI. Ive never seen a better, simpler setup for math at such a reasonable price. Suggestions: - Night mode! That white background can get really bright when youre working on a project at 1:00 A.M. - Better formatting for note-taking. This is one HUGE advantage of, say Mathematica. Being able to present problems with annotation would be a major plus in my book, and the comment capability isnt quite enough.

I keep PocketCAS on my Mac and iOS devices. The user interface took me some getting used to, but it’s a much better fit for mobile devices than all the calculator emulations. On top that, I love the computer algebra system PocketCAS is based on, GIAC/XCAS.

Best CAS/grapher on macOS/iOS

This is hands down the best app in this category by far. I’ve had it for years and use it to teach my kids

Best CAS for Apple devices with iCloud and even Handoff

I use an HP Prime Graphing Calculator and this app is the best alternative, or maybe even an upgrade, for its CAS function. They use the same kernel known as Xcas. Though HP provides a completely free emulator for computers (25 bucks for iOS), it's frustrating to navigate through formulas in an 'exactly emulated' window with a 320*240 resolution. Besides, I'm happy to find this app supports more 3D graphing functionalities than HP Prime. Such as 3D parametric plots, lines, planes... and even animated plots! I've also tried the app from Xcas website, only finding it's not updated and maintained for newer macOS versions for a long time. And to be honest, the original Xcas app is really hard to use. An added bonus is that this app supports the Handoff function. It conveniently pops up on the dock of my Mac, and with just one click, I can seamlessly transition it onto my big screen. Don't hesitate to get it! Totally worth the 50 bucks for all your Apple devices!

Quick, Easy, and Powerful

I bought this app many years ago and use it on an almost daily basis. It is extremely capable and very easy to use.

Indispensable tool

I love PocketCAS and have been using it for years. It's usable for everything from simple calculations to symbolic algebra to sketching out complex simulations, and the fact that I can use the same document from my laptop, iPad, and phone adds immeasurably to its usefulness.

Frustrating

I have experience with Mathematica and a little with Maple (admittedly some few years ago) and I have been trying to do some modest computations and a presentation with PocketCAS. It has been extremely frustrating. The documentation for how this program works is extremely limited; well-written, extensive documentation might solve problems like mine but I've looked and not found it. A few simple examples do not suffice. A supremely detailed manual for the parent CAS, from which this seems to be an extremely limited and, to be honest, messed-up copy, is only frustrating. I emailed the author once with no reply. I can find no forum where one might go to get questions answered. I sincerely wish Macs had a reasonably priced alternative to Mathematica or Maple which could just be bought and installed. I hoped it was PocketCAS but as of now, for me, it is assuredly not. I would have graded this lower based on my experience but in deference to those who have found it useful, I did not.

Not a substitute for microsoft mathematics

I was looking for a sub for microsoft mathematics for my accounting class I could use on my mac. Unfortunately, this is not that and it doesn't give me the value of x by hitting "enter." I'd wasted money and am dissapointed.

Great Toolkit

Has always provided graphs and calculations I needed - and the variety of presentations and variations has been most helpful.

Herausragendes Matematik-Tool

AudioChiemgau · 7 years ago

Very helpful.

PocketCAS is a really useful tool for quickly trying out algorithms and equations. It has support for many useful features like variables and importing data. I like it for trying out an equation more quickly than if I had to write a program for it.

pocket calculator rating

Excellent program. Just as good — even better than an expensive graphing calculator. Does everything I need to do. Well worth the money. Much better than a handheld graphing calculator. I love the way that one can assign variables to make any problem clear and easy.

Great app and companion to the iOS app!

I downloaded the iOS app while I was away from home and had forgotten my calculator and fell in love immediately. As soon as I got back I made sure to grab the Mac version as well. It’s convenient that I can use either one and pick up right where I left off with iCloud integration. I highly recommend both of these apps!

Fantastic!

I have used mathematical modeling throughout my career to forecast manufacturing throughput. This application is so much more versatile to the developing of models than a spreadsheet, because it allows you to compare different components if the model in the same graph and make hypothetical changes without data by simply using math.

Scripts for maximum extensibility

This has allowed me to derive and test solutions for computer algorithms. The greatest thing about this program is scripting. If a function doesn’t exist, you can create it using an already large set of functions. Such a great tool for price. I would like a full reference manual. It has so many functions, most are described in examples and manual. I seem to keep finding built in syntax that I cannot find out how to use.

Very nice program. Adds so much capability to my iPod.

This one stands out from the crowd

This is one of the finest, most capable calculators in the App Store. The library of available functions is extensive. The documentation is solid and useful, but the interface is intuitive enough that you can dive right into it and get a lot of power right away. Clearly a great deal of thought went into the design. There are times it feels like it’s running the software from the HP Prime (flagship) hardware calculator, but then there are times when you realize it’s easier to use PocketCAS than the calculator. One of the slickest parts is iCloud syncing. Start a calculation scenario at the home or office, open it up on the iPhone or iPad when you’re out in the field. Absolutely worth its price and then some, so buy the Mac version and the iPhone version.
